In the early nineteenth century, the territory known as Texas was under Mexican control. So when, in December of 1835, a volunteer Texan force drove Mexican forces out of San Antonio, Mexico's President, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna mustered Mexican troops in preparation for retaliation. Sam Houston ordered San Antonio abandoned, but troops led by James Bowie bravely chose to remain and fight. As Santa Anna's army approached, William Travis, who had taken command because Bowie had fallen ill, declared, "Victory or Death!" After thirteen days of seige, the Mexican army, numbering at least 2,400 men, stormed the Alamo on the morning of March 6, 1836. The Texan defenders, numbering only 185 men including Davy Crockett and his "Tennessee Boys," repulsed the invaders twice but ultimately succumbed. Their brave stand inflamed the Texas cause. Six weeks later, at San Jacinto, a determined Texan army shouting, "Remember the Alamo!," defeated the Mexican force and captured Santa Anna.
