A Short History of the US Army Flag
The first official directive regarding flags for the newly formed Continental Army came from General George Washington in early 1776. Washington naturally emulated English military traditions when he ordered "that every Regiment should be furnished Colours" for the purpose of identifying separate units.
It wasn't until 1780 however, that the first Army National Color was adopted. The design consisted of an eagle on a field of blue along with the regiment designation.
Over the years, the Army has developed an extensive system of flags to identify each organization, usually incorporating the uniform insignia of the organization.
The US Army flag as we know it today debuted on June 14, 1956 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on the US Army's 181st anniversary.
