A Short History of the Arizona State Flag

Two years before Arizona statehood, at the 1910 National Rifle Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio, every rifle team present with the exception of Arizona's was identified by a flag. At the following year's event, the Arizona team carried a flag designed by Colonel Charles W. Harris. Arizona was granted statehood in 1912 and Colonel Harris, now the state's Adjutant General, designed what we now know as the Arizona state flag based largely on the design the Rifle Team had flown the year prior. The flag shows 13 rays of the setting sun which represent the 13 Colonies and a copper colored star representing the state's predominant copper industry.
