By the end of the 17th century Guam had become a colony of Spain, spelling trouble for the native "Chamorro" people. In subsequent decades, members of the native population were either killed off or had begun to intermarry with the Spanish, adopting the European culture. Guam remained in Spanish hands until the Spanish-American War, when US troops captured Guam.
The territorial flag of Guam was designed in 1917 by Helen Paul, who was the wife of an officer in the US Navy. However, since Guam was a US territory, and not a state, the official flag was considered to be the US flag.
Mrs. Paul's design was finally recognized and officially adopted in 1948, following the re-taking of the island from the Japanese four years earlier. Today, Guam remains a US territory and strategically important to our military presence in the Pacific.
