A Short History of the Illinois State Flag
Apparently people are not the only ones who can suffer from an identity crisis - the Illinois State flag had it bad for it's first 54 years of existence.
The story begins in 1912 when Mrs. Ella Park Lawrence, the Illinois State Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, launched a campaign to drum up support among Illinois' political establishment for a State flag. The D.A.R. sponsored a contest and the design submitted by Lucy Derwent depicting the Illinois State Seal on a white background was chosen.
The one drawback was that if you were not familiar with the State Seal of Illinois, you would have no way of knowing what state the flag belonged to. During a tour of duty in Vietnam, Chief Petty Officer Bruce McDaniel became aware of the problem when no one seemed to be able to identify the flag in the mess hall. McDaniel contacted his State Representative who then sponsored a bill to add the State's name to the bottom of the flag and hence, there is now no mistaking the Illinois State flag.
