A Short History of the Kansas State Flag

The State Flag of Kansas started life, as many state flags have, as a military banner for the Kansas National Guard. The original flag was raised at Fort Riley by Governor Ben Paulin and later adopted as the State flag in 1927.

The Kansas flag consists of the State Seal at the center on a blue background, the name of the state at the bottom in bold, yellow letters, a horizontal bar of alternating blue and yellow spiraling stripes above the Seal along with an open Sunflower. The Sunflower is the state flower and signifies "open frankness." The blue and yellow striped bar represents the Louisiana Purchase, of which Kansas was a part. And the State Seal depicts the pioneer origins of the State.
