A Short History of the Louisiana State Flag

Louisiana was admitted to the Union as the eighteenth state in 1812 and as was customary at the time, flew the flag of the United States. Following the secession of South Carolina from the Union, Louisiana also seceded but did not immediately join other states in the Confederate States of America, choosing instead to form her own independent country. A flag was produced with the 13 stripes of the U.S. flag but with alternating red, white and blue colors, a red canton and a single yellow star.

Louisiana's experiment with complete independence ended after only two months when the State joined the Southern Cause. The State of Louisiana eventually adopted a new flag design when the State Legislature approved the design that is still in use today.
