A Short History of the New Jersey State Flag

The state flag of New Jersey can give the credit for at least part of its design to George Washington. The Continental Army, under the command of General George Washington, rode out the bitterly cold winter of 1779 encamped near Morristown, New Jersey. At the end of March, the Continental Congress authorized Washington to provide uniforms for the New Jersey Continental Line, and Washington subsequently ordered that the coats for these uniforms "be dark blue, faced with buff" as a nod to the original Dutch settlers of New Jersey.

In early 1780, it was ordered that the New Jersey Regiments should carry two standards; one, the American flag and the other, a State flag with a background matching the buff facings of the uniforms, hence the familiar buff color of the New Jersey state flag.
