A Short History of the New Mexico State Flag

The New Mexico state flag was designed by Dr. Harry Mera, a physician and amateur archeologist from Santa Fe, as his entry in a State flag contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1920.

Many believe that the design is merely an imaginative stylized depiction of the New Mexico sun, but in reality, it is a lot more than that. While it is a representation of the sun, it originates from ancient pottery discovered at Zia Pueblo, hence its designation—a "Zia". The number 4 was sacred to the indigenous people of New Mexico, which explains the four "points" of the sun, each consisting of four "rays." The native people of New Mexico saw the significance of the number 4 in just about everything, from the four seasons, to the four points of the compass.
