A Short History of the South Carolina State Flag
The state flag of South Carolina has a rich heritage, having descended from a flag designed in 1775 by Colonel William Moultrie. Moultrie's flag consisted simply of the now familiar crescent moon in the upper left corner over a blue background, and was raised above Fort Sullivan in June of 1776 when the South Carolina Militia prevented British naval vessels from entering Charleston Harbor.
The Palmetto was added to the center of the flag shortly after South Carolina seceded from the Union. The Palmetto had been designated as the State Tree in honor of it's role in the defeat of the British at Fort Sullivan. The walls of the fort, it seems, were made of Palmetto trunks which were soft and absorbed the British cannonballs rather than breaking.
