A Short History of the Tennessee State Flag

The State Flag of Tennessee, believed by many to be the best of the state flag designs, is simple but powerfully symbolic. Designed by LeRoy Reeves, a soldier in the Third Regiment, Tennessee Infantry in 1905, the design of the flag is best described in Reeves' own words:

"The three stars are of pure white, representing the three grand divisions of the state. They are bound together by the endless circle of the blue field, the symbol being three bound together in one—an indissoluble trinity. The large field is crimson. The final blue bar relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag from showing too much crimson when hanging limp. The white edgings contrast more strongly the other colors."

The three divisions of the State of Tennessee are the east, where Knoxville and Chattanooga lie, the central section which includes Nashville and the western part of the state where Memphis is found.
