A Short History of the Idaho State Flag
The Idaho state flag has as it's roots, a flag that was created for service in the Spanish-American war. Designed by Colonel Charles H. Irvin, and sewn in Chicago, the flag of the First Idaho Volunteer Infantry travelled to the Philippines and was carried in various battles there before returning home in 1899.
In 1907, the State Legislature voted to commission a state flag and the suggestion was made to use the First Volunteer Infantry Flag as a model. The Legislature gave the Idaho Adjutant General the authority to approve the final design which while not any where near an exact reproduction of the Volunteer Infantry Flag, maintained the same general design, replacing the Idaho Territorial Seal with the newer Idaho State Seal.
