A Short History of the Maine State Flag

The original design of the state flag of Maine as specified in 1901 by the State Legislature in "An Act to Establish a State Flag," was to be simply a pine tree at center with a buff background and a blue "Polar Star".

Apparently, that design was just too plain for most tastes and in 1909, the State Legislature again adopted a new State flag, adding the State Seal in the center on a blue background, a scroll below the Seal reading simply, "MAINE", and a yellow stylized star above the Seal. This is virtually the same design as we see today.
