A Short History of the Michigan State Flag
The Michigan State flag prior to the Civil War featured a portrait of Stevens T. Mason, the state's first governor along with the State Coat of Arms. The second iteration in 1865 replaced Governor Mason's portrait with the Coat of Arms of the United States. The third and final version, which was officially adopted in 1911, features only the State Coat of Arms over a blue background.
