A Short History of the North Dakota State Flag

The State Flag of North Dakota was first a military flag before being officially adopted as the State flag in 1911. The design of the flag, with the exception of the state name contained in a scroll, was offered for consideration by Colonel John H. Fraine to the North Dakota Legislative Assembly and was identical to the regimental flag carried by the North Dakota Infantry to Cuba in the Spanish American War.

The design of the flag was briefly challenged in 1953 when a bill was introduced in the Legislature calling for a change because of the flag's similarity with the Great Seal of the United States.
