A Short History of the Oklahoma State Flag
The State flag originally adopted by Oklahoma in 1911 consisted of a single, large white star with a blue border containing the number "46" over a red background. The design was universally admired for more than a decade, but following the Communist Revolution in Russia, popularity waned.
In 1925, a new flag was adopted from a design submitted in a contest by Mrs. George Fluke, Jr. The design, which we still recognize today as the Oklahoma State flag, consists of a Osage war shield centered on a blue field with the State's name in white letters below. Over the shield are crossed two symbols of peace—the ceremonial peace pipe of the Osage and the olive branch of the American settlers.
