A Short History of the Rhode Island State Flag
The central element of the Rhode Island State flag is the depiction of an anchor, which has been the symbol for the state since the mid 17th century. The anchor symbol as the State Seal originally dates to the Cromwellian Patent of 1643 which established the Providence Plantations. The word "Hope" above the anchor was added to the Seal the following year (although it did not appear on the flag until much later) after King Charles II granted a more liberal charter to the Colony of Rhode Island.
The state flag of Rhode Island as we see it today was officially adopted by the State General Assembly in 1897.
