A Short History of the Utah State Flag

Utah wasted no time in adopting a state flag once the State was admitted to the Union in 1896. The first Utah state flag consisted of an all-white rendering of the Great Seal on a light blue background.

In 1911, a new battleship designated the USS Utah was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. In 1912, in honor of the ship, the Sons and Daughters of Utah presented a revised version of the State flag, depicting the Great Seal in full color within a thin gold ring. The State Legislature adopted the design in 1913 and it has remained as the Utah state flag to this day.
