Washington, D.C. Flag

Appropriately enough, the distinctive design of the Flag of Washington, D.C. was borrowed from the coat of arms belonging to the descendants of George Washington. The earliest known example can be seen as a stained glass window in the Abbey at Selby, England, and dates to the 15th century.

The design of the D.C. Flag was the result of a competition sponsored by Congress in 1938 that was won by a commercial artist by the name of Charles A. R. Dunn. If he were alive today, Dunn would no doubt be gratified to know that his design is universally regarded as one of the best flag designs in America.

As an interesting side note, several years ago the D.C. City Council passed a bill to amend the flag by adding the phrase, "Taxation Without Representation", but it was never signed by the Mayor. The phrase was in reference to the movement towards statehood and it appears on the city's automobile license plates.
