A Short History of the West Virginia State Flag
West Virginia did not officially adopt a State flag until 66 years after joining the Union in 1863. In 1929, the State Legislature adopted what we know today as the State flag which consists of the State Coat of Arms within a wreath of rhododendron above which is a ribbon containing the words, "State of West Virginia". The background of the flag is white and there is a wide blue border on four sides.
